The Great Ife Student’s Union Fellows (GISUF), on Sunday send a condolence message to the wife and family of the late Yoruba social-Cultural Afenifere spokesman, Yinka Odumakin who died earlier this month in Lagos.
The students union in a statement signed by the past and present President and PRO said the late Yinka Odumakin is an example of the great Ife they’re so proud of.
The union reiterated that, “Yinka Odumakin served meritoriously as the Publicity Secretary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students Union in 1988. As the spokesperson of such a principled, virile and largely progressive union, the rigours of work usually builds in such a way that one becomes the cynosure of all critical eyes. A Great Ife PRO and unionist works round the clock, and Yinka’s political life and work shows this bright side.”
The statement reads;
GREAT IFE STUDENTS’ UNION FELLOWS (GISUF)
(Being a public statement of condolence to Dr. Joe Odumakin and the entire family.)
YINKA ODUMAKIN IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE GREAT IFE WE ARE SO PROUD OF!
REST ON IN POWER OUR ARCHIVAL P.R.O!!
We commiserate with the family of Yinka Odumakin and the members of the public who has lost a great inspiration in the field of conscientious public speaking and relations. We must say that while we all mourn Yinka, we must note that it is not the length of life that matters but the volume of values put into it.
Yinka Odumakin’s finesse and sharp perspectives as publicity secretary of many organisations like Afenifere, and many others shows the essence of activism and unionism. Yinka is able to build on public issues by being as congressional and decisive as possible. This great talent makes us proud as Great Ife Unionists because the students union has served as a great breeding ground for those who seek to change and make the society better.
Yinka Odumakin served meritoriously as the Publicity Secretary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Students Union in 1988. As the spokesperson of such a principled, virile and largely progressive union, the rigours of work usually builds in such a way that one becomes the cynosure of all critical eyes. A Great Ife PRO and unionist works round the clock, and Yinka’s political life and work shows this bright side.
Just as Yinka’s daring nature even while being megaphones for such big rulers like General Muhammadu Buhari , organisations like Afenifere, and campaigns like the Anti-Yar’adua Cabal Hegemony that brought in then Vice president Goodluck Jonathan as President show how the many victimizations faced by students activists and unionists help to shape resilience in life as we have always seen the campus as a microcosm of the larger society. Recall as fellow archival PRO Femi Falana noted; Yinka Odumakin was suspended by the management for leading Protests against the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) undemocratically imposed on Nigerians by the Ibrahim Babangida regime. Just like the other seven, Yinka stood tall as most Great Ife Unionists do, in school and in the political world!
It is in memory of this stunning star that we former and current Great Ife Unionists and activists declare that the OAU management under Professor Ogunbodede to reinstate the “proscribed” students union unconditionally with immediate effect. All the processes for a union Elections should start soon!
We support all peaceful and massive processes to effect the union reinstatement and commend the current efforts by activists and the NANS Zone D. We demand that the management listen to all voices of reason and do the needful immediately. Our students union is legal and democratic.
We call on all Nigerians to learn from the painstaking and principled life of late Yinka Odumakin. We cannot continue to pretend that all is well as the country is close to being in flames. We all need to unite from North to South and makes the necessary socio-economic and political changes.
We commiserate with the wife and entire family of late Odumakin, as we believe his worthy values would remain a succour in the heart of all.
Our PRO lives on!
Long Live Great Ife Students Union!!
